    Effect of the rate and duration of forced air cooling on the quality of Imperial apricots and Pioneer and Songold plums

Prunus salicina L. ā€˜Pioneerā€™, an early season South African plum cultivar, ripens quickly on and off the tree which results in rejections for soft fruit at packing and on arrival overseas. ā€˜Songoldā€™, a yellow, midseason plum cultivar tends to develop GB and OR during cold-storage in some seasons, which renders the fruit inedible and results in high rejection rates. Prompt cooling and good temperature management are essential to lower the rate of physiological deterioration of stone fruit. In some commercial depots in South Africa, forced air cooling (FAC) of stone fruit can take as long as 48 to 72 h, depending on the type of packaging. Consequently, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of the rate and duration of FAC on the fruit quality of different stone fruit cultivars. Fruit was subjected to the following FAC rates at a delivery air temperature of -1.0Ā°C to a pulp temperature of 0Ā°C for 6 h, 12 h, 24 h stepwise cooling and 48 h stepwise cooling for the apricot, and 12 h, 24 h, 48 h stepwise cooling, and 72 h stepwise cooling for the two plum cultivars. The fruit was evaluated after cold-storage and a simulated shelf-life period. The trial was conducted in two consecutive seasons. ā€˜Imperialā€™ apricots had the best internal quality after 6 h of FAC, ā€˜Pioneerā€™ plums were not affected by FAC rate or duration, and ā€˜Songoldā€™ plums had the best internal quality when FAC was applied for 12 h and longer. These results on plums demonstrate that cultivar differences must be considered when drawing up handling protocols for stone fruit, as a blanket recommendation may lead to the induction of quality defects

    International Trade Performance of the South African Fish Industry

    In an effort to gain a better understanding of the trade in fish products by South Africa a starting point is examining South Africa's current trade in fish products. Useful tools in this regard, the Gini-coefficient, used to examine the degree of concentration for fish exports, and the intra-industrial trade coefficient (IIT), and used to examine the balance of international fish trade by South Africa. The Gini-coefficient for fish exports shows that fish export by South Africa is highly concentrated. The trend in concentration appears to have remained constant, and therefore the South African fisheries industry may boast a competitive advantage. However, cognisance should be taken of the fact that such a high level of concentration may render the South African fisheries industry vulnerable to exogenous changes. The IIT analysis shows that, after 1985, the fisheries industry underwent substantial changes in that it has increased exportable surpluses, probably as a result of increased specialization and competitiveness. The analysis conducted does not pertinently explain the factors that sustain the levels of concentration, nor does it highlight specific factors that may underpin the competitiveness of the industry, and hence further analysis in this regard is necessary.International Relations/Trade,

    Mindfulness: A foothold for Rogers's humanistic person-centred approach

    This article probed and contextualised the strong parallels between meditation derived mindfulness and Rogers's humanistic person-centred (PC) approach. This was done through a conceptual and evaluative literature review of the PC framework in relation to definitive descriptions of mindfulness. Elements of mindfulness within the core conditions of PC therapy were explored and verified. Quotations, pragmatic, behavioural descriptions and explications provided evidence of a shared ideology inherent in both concepts via ā€œway of beingā€. The findings suggested that mindfulness cultivates, harmonises and deepens essential therapist qualities in PC therapy. This review article could supply a rationale for significant inferences in the implementation of meditation-inspired activities in the practical preparation of trainee therapists as well as optimising proficiency and refinement in professional practice

    The Economic Rationale for Agricultural Regeneration and Rural Infrastructure Investment in South Africa

    This paper informs government policy insofar as it relates to the agricultural and rural development sectors and infrastructure investment within these sectors. The paper first quantifies the role of agriculture in the South African economy. This is done within the context of, inter alia, food security, agricultureā€™s contribution to gross domestic product (GDP), economic linkages and multipliers with respect to the agricultural sector, as well as agricultureā€™s employment creation and external stabilisation capacity. Investment in the agricultural and rural sectors are then analysed with a view of supporting the argument that agricultureā€™s role in the economy is sufficiently important to warrant regenerative strategies, including renewed emphasis on agricultural and rural infrastructure investment by South African policy makers. The quantification of the agricultural sector in relation to the total economy and that of agricultural and rural infrastructure investment are investigated against the backdrop of declining government support, increasing production risks due to a variety of exogenous events like climate change, and increasing dynamic trade impacts. In this paper, the authors offer both supporting arguments in terms of current economic policy and recommendations for more decisive policy measures aimed at agricultural regeneration and rural infrastructure investment.

    Visualising trends in dentition to lip mouth morphology using geometric morphometrics

    Linear measurements taken from bony landmarks are often utilised in facial approximation (FA) to estimate and plan the placement of overlying soft tissue features. This process similarly guides craniofacial superimposition (CFS) practices. Knowledge of how hard and soft tissue features spatially relate around the mouth region is, however, limited. Geometric morphometric techniques have thus been used to investigate size and shape variation in dentition-to-lip mouth morphology in a South African population. Twenty landmarks (twelve dentition, eight lips) were digitised, using cone-beam CT images of the anterior craniofacial complex in a Frankfurt/Frankfort position, for 147 individuals aged between 20 and 75 years. Principal Component Analysis and Canonical Variate Analysis established that much shape variation exists. A two-way ANOVA identified significant (p < 0.0001) population and sex variation with mouth shape. Black individuals presented with thicker lips, with the oral fissure aligning closely to the dental occlusion. Oral fissure position for white individuals corresponded to the inferior one-quarter (females) or one-sixth (males) of the maxillary central incisor crowns. Males presented larger dimensions than females, but females had a greater lip-to-teeth height ratio than their male counterparts. A pooled within-group regression analysis assessed the effect of age on the dentition and lips and found that it had a significant (p < 0.0001) impact on mouth shape. Ageing was associated with a reduced lip and teeth height, increased mouth width, and a lowered oral fissure and cheilion placement. The generated mean shape data, with metric guides, offer a visual and numerical guide that builds on existing FA and CFS standards, enhancing our understanding of hard and soft tissue relationships

    Is the Wild Coast in eastern South Africa a distinct marine bioregion?

    Abstract: The South African coastline can be divided into at least four temperature-defined marine bioregions, including the tropical north-east coast, the subtropical east coast, the warm-temperate south coast, and the cool-temperate west coast. There are also two biogeographical transition zones, the south-west coast and the south-east coast (or Wild Coast). The former is sometimes considered a distinct marine bioregion, but no such status has yet been suggested for the Wild Coast. Previous data on the distribution of a recently described but very common coastal crab, Hymenosoma longicrure, indicated that this species could be a Wild Coast endemic. If confirmed, this would be a first indication that this region harbours unique fauna, and that additional research is required to determine whether the Wild Coast constitutes a distinct bioregion that needs to be managed separately from other coastal regions. In the present study, we generated novel genetic data for H. longicrure and compared the speciesā€™ range with that of its southern African congeners. We found that H. longicrure occurs north of the Wild Coast, where its range overlaps with that of H. projectum. This finding rejects the idea that the Wild Coast harbours endemic fauna and suggests that the ranges of the two species may be linked to the subtropical and tropical bioregions, respectively, with some southward dispersal facilitated by the southward-flowing Agulhas Current. We conclude that there is as yet no compelling evidence that the Wild Coast is a distinct marine bioregion, and concur with previous biogeographical studies which have suggested that the Wild Coast is an area in which species from the subtropical and warm-temperate bioregions have overlapping ranges. Nonetheless, that fact that no biological information is available for the majority of the regionā€™s estuaries highlights the necessity of comprehensively documenting the biodiversity of this understudied region to fully resolve this issue

    Recent HIV prevalence trends among pregnant women and all women in sub-Saharan Africa: implications for HIV estimates

    OBJECTIVES: National population-wide HIV prevalence and incidence trends in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are indirectly estimated using HIV prevalence measured among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics (ANC), among other data. We evaluated whether recent HIV prevalence trends among pregnant women are representative of general population trends. DESIGN: Serial population-based household surveys in 13 SSA countries. METHODS: We calculated HIV prevalence trends among all women aged 15ā€“49 years and currently pregnant women between surveys conducted from 2003 to 2008 (period 1) and 2009 to 2012 (period 2). Log-binomial regression was used to test for a difference in prevalence trend between the two groups. Prevalence among pregnant women was age-standardized to represent the age distribution of all women. RESULTS: Pooling data for all countries, HIV prevalence declined among pregnant women from 6.5 [95% confidence interval (CI) 5.3ā€“7.9%] to 5.3% (95% CI 4.2ā€“6.6%) between periods 1 and 2, whereas it remained unchanged among all women at 8.4% (95% CI 8.0ā€“8.9%) in period 1 and 8.3% (95% CI 7.9ā€“8.8%) in period 2. Prevalence declined by 18% (95% CI āˆ’9ā€“38%) more in pregnant women than nonpregnant women. Estimates were similar in Western, Eastern, and Southern regions of SSA; none were statistically significant (Pā€Š>ā€Š0.05). HIV prevalence decreased significantly among women aged 15ā€“24 years while increasing significantly among women 35ā€“49 years, who represented 29% of women but only 15% of pregnant women. Age-standardization of prevalence in pregnant women did not reconcile the discrepant trends because at older ages prevalence was lower among pregnant women than nonpregnant women. CONCLUSION: As HIV prevalence in SSA has shifted toward older, less-fertile women, HIV prevalence among pregnant women has declined more rapidly than prevalence in women overall. Interpretation of ANC prevalence data to inform national HIV estimates should account for both age-specific fertility patterns and HIV-related sub-fertility

    South African national household survey of HIV/AIDS prevalence, behavioural risks and mass media impact-detailed methodology and response rate results

    Objectives. To describe the methodology used in a recent survey of HIV/AIDS in South Africa and to present the response rates.Methods. A cross-sectional, national household-based survey was conducted using second-generation surveillance procedures. A complex multistage sampling technique was used to create a master sample of 1 000 census enumerator areas out of a total of 86 000 nationally. Aerial photographs were taken and used to randomly select more than 10 197 households and ultimately 13 518 individuals from a sampling frame of 31 321 people. Phase 1 of the study involved notifying the household residents about the study and collecting key demographic information on respondents aged 2 years and older. This information was used to randomly select up to 3 respondents from each household: 1 adult (25 years and older), 1 youth (15- 24 years), and 1 child (2- 14 years). In phase 2 nurses interviewed respondents and collected oral fluid specimens for HIV testing. In the case of children aged 2 - 11 years, parents or guardians were interviewed, but HIV testing was performed on the selected children. Questionnaire data were anonymously linked with HIV test results.Results. A total of 9 963 persons agreed to be interviewed and 8 840 were tested for HIV, yielding a response rate of 73.7% and 65.4% respectively. However, only 8 428 (62.3%) HIV test results were correctly matched with behavioural data. The results showed that those tested for HIV did not differ from those not tested in terms of key determinants.Conclusion. It is possible to use community-based surveys to study the prevalence of HIV in the general population

    Discrimination of arid vegetation with airborne multispectral scanner hyperspectral imagery

In most cases, these works may not be reposted without the explicit permission of the copyright holder."Hyperspectral imagery from the airborne multispectral scanner was evaluated for discrimination and mapping of vegetation components in a semi-arid rangeland environment in Southern Australia. Automated unmixing of two image strips with 5-m resolution revealed several vegetation endmembers in the visible, near infrared (near-IR), and short-wave infrared portions of the imagery. Identity of the endmembers was determined through examination of their short-wave infrared and full-wavelength spectra, and their mapped distributions and correlation with percent cover of vegetation species were measured in sample plots. In addition, to assist interpretation of the image signatures, short-wave infrared reflectance spectra for the dominant vegetation components at the study site were collected with a portable infrared mineral analyzer (PIMA) spectrometer. Endmembers separately mapped included Eucalyptus and other trees such as sugarwood, understorey chenopod shrubs, dry plant litter, and soil surface cryptogamic crust. Several endmembers were significantly positively correlated with field measurements of plant cover. Most of the tree canopy endmembers showed broad celluloseā€“lignin absorption features in the short-wave infrared (SWIR), and narrower absorptions caused by plant waxes and oils. The field spectra confirmed that the sclerophyll and xerophytic plants show identifiable cellulose, lignin, and plant wax absorption features, even when live and actively photosynthesising. This spectral expression of biochemical constituents in live plants points to the benefit of using the whole spectral range from visible to short-wave infrared in vegetation studies.Megan Lewis, Vittoria Jooste and Aurelio A. de Gaspari
